The Daemons Databank

The Master poses as the new vicar in the rural community of Devil's End, just as an archaeologist begins work on opening an ancient barrow near the village. Despite the Doctor's attempts to stop the work, a Daemon named Azal is released from the barrow. A member of an ancient alien race who guided life on Earth during its early years, Azal has remained behind to judge humanity's worthiness, and to pass on his power if need be. And the Master will stop at nothing to gain that power.

Between 50,000 and 30,000 BC, the Neanderthals became extinct and were replaced by early modern humans, thanks to the intervention of the awesome aliens known as the Daemons
AZAL
Last of the Daemons. He was in a miniaturized state of suspended animation under Devil's Hump when he was brought back to life by the Master. Azal planned to judge Man and pass on his power. He offered it to the Third Doctor who refused. Azal then tried to kill him, but Jo Grant threw herself in front of the Doctor. The seeming irrationality of this action caused Azal to commit suicide (JJJ).
BERT
Landlord of the Cloven Hoof in Devil's End. He served the Master and tried to kill the Third Doctor, but was cowed into surrendering when the Doctor demonstrated his remote control of Bessie. He was captured by Benton, but later killed by Bok (JJJ).
BOK

CLOVEN HOOF

DAEMONS
Immensely powerful aliens from Demos, who looked like giant, goat-like, horned humanoids, and were masters of psionic science. They arrived on Earth circa 100,000 BC, and started mankind on the road to civilization. It is likely that the Daemons were partly responsible for the mysterious extinction of the Neanderthals and their replacement by early modern humans. The Daemons made a deep and everlasting impression on the native cavemen, and contributed to shaping their mythology. The Daemons revisited Earth at irregular intervals to check on the results of their evolutionary experiments. When they finally departed, the Daemons left one of their own, Azal, behind, in a miniaturized, suspended animation state to eventually judge mankind and pass on his power. Azal was summoned back to life by the Master, but was eventually defeated by Jo Grant's willingness to sacrifice her own life to save that of the Third Doctor (JJJ).
